Secret Garden begins on 5 April at 6pm on BBC One, with Attenborough’s 100th birthday the following month on 8 May. Secret Garden features five different UK gardens. “From pine martens in the Western Highlands to blue tits in Bristol, dormice in South Wales, swallows in the Lake District and otters in Oxfordshire, the series reveals an undiscovered world right on our doorstep.”
Secret Garden estimate the 9.5m pet cats in Britain may kill 55m birds annually. Attenborough reveals that putting bells on cats “reduces pet cats’ hunting success by a third”, and raising bird feeders higher also cuts deaths. Keeping cats indoors during bird breeding season is another idea.

Gardeners’ World episode 4 (3 April)
“With a long Easter weekend to look forward to, Monty Don is on hand with wheelbarrows of practical gardening advice and inspiration. For people who fancy growing their own potatoes, it’s time to get them in the ground. He’ll also be sowing seeds for a colourful cut flower display and starting a new project to show how easy and inexpensive it is to create topiary from yew cuttings. Ashley Edwards heads to a magical spring garden in Horsham to share his love of the season of renewal. In Carmarthenshire, there’s a grower who gave up her job in London to follow her dream of becoming a flower farmer. Plus a gardener in Ely who is simply potty about pots.”
