Rental backyard needs some love! Ideally grass would be perfect but I don’t know if this is realistic considering the dirt is completely hardened. I’m a novice gardener and would not say I have a green thumb. Am I dreaming? Is this worth the time, effort and money?

Landlord is unlikely to help.

Unfortunately with what seems like very little sun and a cute dog, this may be a pipe dream 😢

Would suggest digging it all over – need a garden fork. Then a bag of weed and seed – available quite cheaply at Bunnings.

Don’t spend money on a property you don’t own, chances are you may even get in trouble for it

Lawn? What lawn? I don’t see no lawn 😵‍💫

Poke some holes in the hardened top with a garden fork. Couple of bags of cheap sand, mix with a couple of boxes of the cheapest sun/shade grass seed. (Both at Bunnings.

Try to keep it damp. Try not to walk on it.

Thats all we did. Backyard is now pretty much covered – and it absolutely wasnt pretty when we moved in, haha.

You can’t rent lawns, you’d have to grow one yourself.

That ground is compacted af and needs breaking up. If you wanted grass – I would speak to your local landscape yard about getting a good soil mix and laying turf rather than going from seed given summer is over. It’s going to be hard labour and cost you a few pineapples in materials but you will get better advice and better prices at a landscape yard rather than the big green shed.

Don’t spend money on it! I would buy a couple of BIG pots and plant some avocado pips or citrus pips or similar low cost plants.
