It’s very small and in patches in the yard. Has prickly thorns on it. In Michigan.

  1. Time to buy a goat. Or, you could rent one? My goats loved thistle.

If possible let her bloom. Thistles are great pollen plants as bee food

I’ve heard these called bull thistle or scotch thistle. If you let it, it will grow up to 6’ with a gigantic tap root and some of the sharpest thorns nature has to offer; it puts out a few very large cone shaped flowers and then has fluffy airborne seeds that spread everywhere. It’s an annual, so it will die after that. It is an invasive species in North America, and classed as noxious in most locations. If you decide to pull it, I would, use a tool and spare your hands- those thorns are no joke.

Might be cirsium vulgare, commonly called bull or spear thistle, which is considered invasive in North America.

    That’s bull thistle, Circium vulgare.

It’s non-native, Don’t try to pull it. You have to dig the taproot out. Just make sure it doesn’t flower. There are native thistles that are beneficial for insects and birds and wildlife like deer and elk but this is not one of them

Wait till it shoots up a stalk. When it STARTS developing a flower bud BEFORE any blooms are present. That’s the perfect time to pull these suckers. Easiest after a good rain. ALSO if you pull it at that point, the stalk is a delicious veggie you gotta peel it though.

Thistle. One of my favourites for several reasons. Recently discovering a lot more people than I expected have never seen one

  10. i_heart_kermit

You have to dig out every single shoot of it

Some thing that you may not want to sit on.

Thistle. Has a tap long root. Hard to eliminate. Goats are the best answer. But dig it up at least. Invasive and makes thousands of seeds. Use thick gloves to handle it. Nasty thorny things

My right foot twinged from looking at the picture!

Bull thistle, evil, painful thing, dig up the root while it’s still small.

Would these be considered the same as “burrs”? Like what get stuck to my dogs fur and in their paws sometimes ending up in the rugs throughout my house 🙁 ?
Aside from digging out the plant is there any other way to remove/prevent this thorny weed thing? PS. Before anyone gets defensive thinking I’m a plant killer, i am only asking because whatever growth is making burrs/thorny spuds in my backyard is causing pain to my animals and giving me rashes when transferred inside. I don’t purposely go kill the wonders of nature. Thank you ahead of time 🩷
