Is this fairly common? I’ve had and seen pups growing from your typical locations before, but this is the first time I’ve seen one growing dead center on the top. Almost like a strange type of graft. It’s an OP Icaros yearling and is ~10” tall. I just pulled them from the grow tent this morning and moved them outside in my greenhouse, and hadn’t noticed it until today. The cactus is extremely healthy, no bugs or pests, and hadn’t been damaged that I know of. It’s been pretty much untouched in the tent for months. I’m just curious what this thing is going to look like in a few months.

  1. This usually happens from damage to the tip, like from a bug or other injury. But those hairs make me wonder if it was trying to make a flower and then decided on a pup instead. Weird for that age though.

I’ve only had it from damage, but a dead center pup is always cool. Yours looks like it tried to flower then had a change of heart.
