This is the state of last years compost after overwintering.. It doesn’t seem quite finished but also seems petered out and cold. It’s got a good dark color but there’s still some identifiable constituents, like grass clippings etc. It has done quite an impressive job of consuming loads of shredded cardboard without visible remnants. It has a spongy and clumping texture. Just wondering if I need to let it sit and ‘finish’ or make any additions to expedite said process? Thanks

I’d sift it and throw the big bits into the new pile 🤷

Not quite finished but good enough to use in the garden. It will finish with the help of the worms and soil microbes.

If your seasons are like mine it should finish up quickly now. I’d use that in my garden as is though.

Compost doesn’t have to be uniform in size and look like it came from Gardener’s Are Us. It is going to improve your soil regardless and if you are digging it into the ground, it will just feed the worms better.

I do run my compost through a screen and it comes out all looking like it came from Gardener’s Are Us but a lot doesn’t go through the screen and gets tossed back into the pile for another 6 months. Either way, you are improving your soil.
