Two horticultural specialists have highlighted an essential product regarded as a natural soil enhancer for lawns, which not only enriches colour but also combats moss and weeds – lime.

Specialists at gardening retailer Moowy explained that garden lime is a substance which reduces soil acidity, establishing “favourable conditions for grass” and a “more inhospitable soil for moss and weeds”.

Without proper pH equilibrium, even the most meticulously maintained lawns can struggle to flourish, as excessive acidity can prevent grass from properly absorbing nutrients.

They recommended: “Adding lime to your soil can also help your existing lawn absorb nutrients more efficiently, boosting your healthy turf’s deep green.”

Specialists at LawnPride highlighted that thriving grass relies on a steady supply of essential nutrients, including nitrogen for growth, phosphorus for root development, and potassium for fighting diseases.

Yet, acidic soil can lock away these nutrients, making them inaccessible. The experts explained: “Lime mitigates this issue by adjusting the pH of the soil, releasing essential nutrients for uptake.

“The improved nutrient availability and absorption promote greener, thicker grass and increase the lawn’s resilience.”

They noted that calcitic lime is typically regarded as “faster-acting”, while dolomitic lime contains substantial magnesium levels, which proves advantageous if your lawn lacks this mineral.

Understanding the right timing for lime application is vital for securing the best outcomes. The ideal periods are spring and autumn when the ground stays damp, and temperatures remain moderate.

These seasons allow sufficient time for lime to successfully modify soil pH levels ahead of the main growing season.

Spreaders represent the most commonly employed equipment for ensuring even lime distribution. Handheld spreaders work well for compact lawns, while more extensive areas necessitate walk-behind or tow-behind models.
