We bought these at the end of last summer and had them planted for us. The people told us to just water with a trickle hose for an hour or so every day-very other day until winter. I live in the Cincinnati area of Ohio (6b I think) and I’ve been told that our neighborhood used to be in a wetland type area (haven’t done a soil sample). I’m not sure what is happening to them. Is it too late or is this salvageable? Is this black stuff because of the mulch? I wasn’t sure how far away from the root ball to have the mulch but it was further away before the heavy rains. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’m pretty green when it comes to tree care.

Did you do any sort of soil test before choosing to plant these? Unfortunately, arborvitae can be pretty picky when it comes to their soil conditions. The root of many problems often comes down to planting these trees in the wrong soils.

Does it not drain well where they are planted? That might be why. When these things are full sized they are going to be right up against your patio

Hate those things. They were probably dried out when you planted them. They’re definitely stressed; don’t be surprised if they die.
