Hello friends, and welcome back to Okarga Farm here in northeast Oklahoma—where spring has finally arrived, and I must say, it is putting on quite a show.

In today’s video, we’re taking a stroll through the Courtyard Garden as everything begins to wake up—from the hellebores in full bloom to the hostas just beginning to emerge. There’s nothing quite like these early spring days, with cool mornings and that fresh energy returning to the garden.

I’ll also be refreshing a pair of containers with a combination that feels perfectly suited for the season—soft purples, bright lime greens, and a touch of classic trailing ivy for movement and elegance. It’s a simple planting, but one that adds just the right amount of charm and color as we move toward Easter.

Along the way, we’ll take a look at a few surprises popping up in the beds, discuss what’s working, what needs attention, and how I’m preparing this space for the season ahead.

As always, gardening is a process—and one of the great joys is watching it all unfold day by day.

I’m so glad you’re here in the garden with me.

  1. Chip, the planters turned out so pretty. This is my favorite garden when the hostas are full and cover the ground. It looks like it would be such a cool, refreshing spot to enjoy in the heat of the summer in Oklahoma!!! Thanks for sharing with us your landscaping advice. Love your videos!!!👍🏻

  2. Chip, Im in zone 7b VA, my obsession nandina bushes look awful. We had a hard icy winter this year. Do you have any of those in your property with similar damage? I plan to wait it out to see if they push new growth.

  3. Oh my gosh, the second you mentioned “Elegant Spring Containers” my whole brain did a cartwheel because, wow, every time I try to make anything in my courtyard look elegant it somehow ends up looking like a botanical garage sale where the plants are whispering “We were not consulted.” And goodness, your update reminded me of the year I tried to create a classy spring arrangement and, holy cow, I accidentally bought a pot so big I could’ve rented it out as a studio apartment. There I was, standing in the courtyard, talking to myself like “Luise, sweetie, why does this container look like it’s about to file taxes?” Meanwhile my neighbor peeked over the fence just in time to see me wrestling a hydrangea like it owed me money. And oh dear, the communication breakdown between me and my plants was unreal because I kept saying “Grow with intention” and they kept responding by fainting dramatically every afternoon like Victorian ladies. But honestly, that’s the magic of productivity in the garden: you start with chaos, sprinkle in hope, add a dash of delusion, and suddenly you’re out here feeling confident because one single tulip decided to bloom at a 45 degree angle like it’s posing for a magazine cover. And whew, the uplifting part is realizing that every tiny effort counts, even the messy ones, because growth never looks perfect up close. Sometimes it looks like you, in your courtyard, holding a watering can and whispering “Please cooperate” while pretending you totally know what you’re doing.

  4. The containers turned out beautiful. They’ll be even prettier when the lilacs bloom!! ☀️☀️☀️

  5. I’m enjoying your videos very much, lots of great ideas and plant information! I am very interested in the way you have landscaped the garden you’re working in today. My backyard is shady and I’ve tried without success to grow grass. My plan now is to turn the entire back into mulch, planting beds and pathways. What I’m interested in is how you prepped the area before putting down your mulch? Any barrier cloth? Thanks so much!

  6. Hey Chip, looks great! How did your customer like the carrot pots with all the plantings? I thought they were adorable!

  7. Hey Chip love your channel. Question… why do you remove the bottom portion of your plants before planting? Look forward to your professional advice!

  8. Your choices make a lovely combination of plants in the pots. Looking forward to watching your garden wake up this spring!😊

  9. Love the containers, especially the color purple mixed into it!!Can't wait to see the Lilacs blooming,Chip. Until next time, Happy Gardening!!!

  10. Hey, I respect the effort you’re putting in YouTube is tougher than it looks. A lot of creators struggle not from lack of talent, but strategy. I checked your channel and have a few simple ideas that could boost growth. If you’re open, I’d love to share interested?
