A new community garden in Kingston looks to unite the community through hands-on work and provide free produce.
KINGSTON, Pa. — “So on this side is the community garden.”
While it may just look like some mulch and dirt now.
Here on this corner of Kingston, something much bigger is beginning to grow.
“It’s a different kind of appreciation when you’re getting down and dirty, and you’re getting your hands dirty with it.”
Soon, a new community garden will take shape on the corner of Frederick Street.
Jay Anne Czernianowski started the nonprofit, Green Neighbors Network, focused on making Northeast PA a little more green and a lot more connected.
“People are too focused on things that are going on, terrible things that are going on. I just want people to be able to take a break from technology and the world and come over and get back to nature and get to know one another that you probably don’t even know that live around the corner from you,” said Czernianowski.
This weekend, volunteers were digging in, spreading donated woodchips, and building something meaningful from the ground up.
“Buying things off of Facebook Marketplace, getting donated wood chips, as opposed to buying commercial ones, re-purposing pallets- that’s what this is all about. Because we only have one planet, there is no planet B.”
Hundreds of seedlings are ready to go.
And when it comes to the harvest, everything they plant will be free for the picking.
“Fruits and vegetables, the prices are astronomical. You know, you grow them here, and tomatoes, they just keep producing and producing.”
After just one day of work, the garden is already doing exactly what it’s meant to do: bring people of all ages together.
“There’s no Wi-Fi, so you don’t have a choice but to get your hands dirty and play the good old-fashioned way.”
Czernianowski says they will begin planting once the weather is a little bit warmer.
