A new effort is underway to restore a historic greenhouse in Greenville. Local volunteers and city officials are working together to bring the Glenn Stanley Memorial Greenhouse back into use.
Members of the Butler County Extension Master Gardeners Association recently partnered with City of Greenville Horticulturist Mark Foshee and his team to begin cleanup at the long-neglected site. During their first workday, volunteers cleared overgrown trees, brush and debris surrounding the structure.
“We’re just glad that somebody’s picked up the ball on this and wants to do something with it,” said Master Gardener John Taylor. “Of course, it fits perfectly with our mission, so we’re really happy to help out.”
Taylor said the group quickly embraced the opportunity when approached about the project, noting both its historical importance and its potential for future community use.
“It’s got several potential benefits,” he said. “One is the historical aspect of restoring something that’s been here for so long and then the potential for a lot of community use.”
Foshee, who has served as the city’s horticulturist for just over a year, said the greenhouse immediately caught his attention when he first saw it.
“When I first got to Greenville… I saw the greenhouse and said, ‘We’ve got to go back and look at that,’” Foshee said. “I realized pretty quickly this has got to be something we bring back.”
