In today’s video it’s time for a look at my spring garden plans, projects and progress so far – including new plant opportunities (ideas please!), design inspiration for the blank canvas new garden plus a look at mulching and rejuvenating vegetable planting beds in the polytunnel then a chat about pond and waterfall plans! It’s very much an informal garden tour starting in the jungle garden and walking through the different tropical, arid and productive garden areas before ending up in the new woodland garden project. A busy couple of months ahead (when time allows!) with plenty of exciting exotics, tree and shrub planting, new garden bed and border creating and path making but spring is here now and hopefully we all have more sun in our gardens to help the progress and gardening jobs along!

3:40 if you want showy, you could always go for a Cycas… at a decent size they should be pretty hardy. Don't know if it's the right spot for one though
Something a bit different for the "hole",Drimys winteri.Or,if you don't mind deciduous,Sweet Chestnut,Castanea sativa.
We have almost identical spot with similar sized brick built shed with fence with pretty much the same alignment, always thought it would be good for something that needed a bit of a protection like a schefflera, but will be interested to see what you put there, excellent content as ever George, exciting times!
Did I miss it, or are you painting the fence? If so what colour?
You're never short of new ideas and projects Mr Plant Guy! I'm sure the girls will love the water areas.
Miscanthus lutarioriparius, that would be great and…huge!
Big rocks are a must! Always take care George!💚🙋♂
Loving the sound of the water feature wife’s idea about seeing up the garden is great
Instead of two bridges over the pond, I feel a single small rope bridge on a diagonal between the two grass circles would add another sense of adventure and would be possible to make yourself.
A Choisya could be a nice one for bye the wall easy to keep to whatever size you require.
Great to see all the plans George. I know from the allotment challenges over the last 2 years the size of the job you've got ahead of you. You've taken to it really well and remain really positive 😅😁.
There's an amazing Japanese garden near the A1 not far from Newark which has incredible man made topography. Levels introduced from a flat field to produce an amazing rolling landscaped gardens with beautiful ponds within. Jcb needed for the scale of this. You might need a mini digger for yours the way you're describing it. I'm sure it'll look amazing when complete. I'll send you some pics of the Japanese garden from years ago when I visited via Instagram if you're interested. Good luck
Hey I know it’s not mentioned in the video but do you have any ideas and suggestions how to grow and over winter a brassiopsis mitis! 🙂
Haha i thought for a second you were copying me with your choice of jacket 😂 mine is very similar, but no red 😂 I would go for the loquat, as a standard/half standard tree, definitely more character than the feathered varieties that i am seeing more and of recently.
Crinodendron hookerianum
lantern tree by the brick wall
I would clean inside greenhouse before you start growing because next winter if you don’t there’s a good chance you could get powdery mildew! 😬
A Hydrangea – greeny shade? Limelight I think it’s called.
Lovely to see the plants come back to life!! What about Chamaedorea microspadix and Aspidistra near the brick shed?
Hay George. Where you have your stripped truck trachycarpus, it looks like you have an external plug. If so…how about something that you could protest with a heating cable? I used to live in a house with a cold garden in the winter, but had a nice sized washingtonia planted…heating cable kept it alive and looked great. When i moved i didn't take the palm…too heavy…but the new owner didn't protect…so it is now brown bread!
Some great progress already. You've got so many projects on the go, lots of juggling! I find it can get quite overwhelming with so many tasks and projects to do at once and try and focus on one job at a time. Easier said than done though! It's really exciting watching you tackle the new space and adapt the original garden area. Plants are starting to move now so it won't be long until the full jungle growth returns.
Have you consider getting a small wood shredder for those branches? I've bought one last year and was one of my best buys as far as garden tools goes. Free mulch every year. Cheap also, they go for under 100€ on amazon (at least here in Spain).
Cheers!
Have you considered an Aralia Elata for the gap (02:53)? Really rapid growing and seems to tolerate a mix of sun and shade.
Fingers crossed on the Yunnan 4!
Out of interest (as you weren't sure on which Papyrifera clone you have) do you recall where you got it?
If it's not CS1046 or KR3968, I'd say it could only be KR7613 – very discernable by its 'ribbon candy' culm sheaths (and possibly not Papyrifera).
The candidates would be (in order from least rare to rarest): CS1046 (or 'blue dragon' microprop), KR7613, KR3968, KR7662, KR7615.
Aside from that some other species have a blue-ish colour and are often mistaken.
Hi. What spacing do you recommend to wagner palms for group of 3. Or other cold hardy palm groups
Thanks for sharing your progress, I’m heavily invested in your project! Great idea to create some mounds. Just need to be careful it doesn’t end up looking like teletubbie land 😂
What about a Grevillea victoriae or an Illicium floridanum near the brick wall?
I would love to see a Japanese maple in your garden especially near the New pond
It looks amazing, for ideas maybe an Arbutus "Marina" or Camellia Japonica with Red flowers that reaches a good height.
George I have two questions about plants, my Standard Chamaerops is romping away on the sunny front but one of its higher stems had this odd looking maybe fungus it had a light dark grey border with a pink brown colour inside as if the outer part was drawn is this important or just a regular fungus on the stem to leaf segment.
Also I have a Fargesia Papyrifera Blue Dragon that sends out new shoots but is slower than the others, it's in medium shade and regular soil not claggy. Thank you.
