So there’s a gourd/squash looking plant in a ditch outside my work, and this handsome looking pumpkin(?) was on the vine. It’s approximately 22cm wide.

I wasn’t able to get a photo of the plant itself (work in a place where we can’t have phones), but it looked like some sort of vining squash variety.

It might be a dumb question, but is this a pumpkin and is this safe to eat?

Yes, it is a pumpkin. Should be safe to eat if it grew in a place with no chemical pollution. You are the judge.

That’s pretty good colour actually too, these things grow so well

It’s a kent pumpkin most likely, but it could be a kabocha also.
