I moved into my home about 2 months ago and I’ve been trying to plan out the backyard layout. I made these drawings on the iPhone markup tool, so please don’t judge them too hard. I tried to keep things roughly to scale but it’s definitely not perfect.

In the first picture I placed the chicken coop and run closer to the house. After thinking about it more, I realized it might be too close to my bedroom window on the north side of the house. In the second picture I moved the coop further away and more to the east.

Do you think the coop placement in the first picture is fine, or should I move it like the second picture where it’s further east and farther from the house?

I’m also wondering if the coop in the second spot would block sunlight from the garden at all. I just realized most of my layout ended up pushed right along the fence line and I’m not sure if that’s a mistake.

The playground might look like it’s in a weird spot, but I put it there because it’s right next to the sunroom so I can watch the kids from inside.

The third picture is the full yard in case you think anything should go somewhere else entirely. The only thing is I’d prefer to keep the garden and chickens somewhat close to the house because I really don’t want to run a 300 ft hose for watering.

Would love any suggestions or things you’d change.

I saw someone recommend having a run at least 50-100 feet away from the house for smell. Mine is about 100 feet and I have 1 rooster and 9 hens. It’s not an issue, not a smell problem, not a noise issue, and I get to see them. If you’re limiting your roosters and avoiding noisy birds like Guinea fowl, they probably won’t be too loud. I’m not sure exactly how close that is and chicken shit can get funky.

What’s your wind conditions like? Do you own the tree line far left of your fruit trees?

I would be concerned about investing in fruit trees and heavy regular winds keeping them small, like mtn top trees.

1/10 layout. No roosters or pond to be seen

Chickens are loud even with no roosters plus the smell when it gets hot. I would move the chickens far away from your house as possible and I wouldn’t want my chickens right next to the play yard regardless

the play yard to somewhere there are alot of windows that you can look directly out of at the play yard is great. I dont know about how old your kids are so maybe a fence or line of shrubbery to prevent them from running out to the front of the house or road

To your point about not wanting to run a hose, you are going to need to water your trees amd garden and if you are planning out the spaces all at the same time then I would research some simple diy inground irrigation spouts that you then attach a hose to in the garden, chicken coop ect. He’ll if you really care about safety run one over by your fire pit teach the kids about good fire safety/ awareness

My chickens are about 30-40 feet from. I bedroom window without issues. Clean the coop before it smells and it’s fine.

I have access in winter ( think of any snow drifts you’ll get) and I can feed and collect eggs easier

Also having yours out past your garden seems to have them closer to potential preditors in that forest to the east
