If you’re planning a trip to the garden centre this spring but aren’t sure what plants are actually worth buying, this video will help you shop smarter and save money 🌿

In this video I take you along to the garden centre to show what you should be looking for right now in early spring here in the UK (Zone 9a). Instead of getting distracted by the instant colour displays at the entrance, we head straight outside to the area where you’ll find the trees, shrubs and perennials that will give your garden long-term structure and value.

I share some beautiful plants that would be perfect if you’re hoping to create a cottage garden style, and I also explain how many of these plants can actually be grown much more cheaply from seed if you’re gardening on a budget.

I also show you what to look for when buying wisteria at this time of year (a very important tip if you want flowers!) and a gorgeous early flowering tree called Prunus autumnalis ‘Rosea’, which looks stunning in the garden when little else is in bloom.

To make things easier for beginner gardeners, I also use an empty display table in the garden centre to show a few simple planting ideas — what plants to buy and where you might plant them in your garden.

If you’re new to gardening or want to create a beautiful garden without spending a fortune, I hope this video gives you lots of inspiration 🌸

And if you enjoy learning simple gardening tips like this, don’t forget to subscribe so you don’t miss future videos. I share weekly beginner gardening advice, garden tours and budget-friendly planting ideas.

  1. Thanks Sophie, I learn so much from your videos and thanks to you… my house if crammed with ooooo many seedlings… much to my other half's mild annoyance. I just keep telling him how much money it's saving. 😂😅

Is there any chance you could share in more detail how your brilliant water feature was made? The squarish one. Would love to have one like it for filling the watering can.

  2. I’ve sown salvia seeds and verbena seeds and I have a whole tray of salvias that have germinated and only 2 verbena. Sown the exact same time on the same window sill. I think I’m just going to go buy some small ones from the GC instead 😂

  3. The Clematis Montana has HUGE beautiful flowers. Clematis Elizabeth has the same flowers but a bit smaller, like half the size.

Erigeron are so easy from seed right? Buy seeds for £3

The Purple Hebes are weird. They look SO good this time of year. SO purple. And then in summer the colour fades which is fine because other things are doing their thing

I bought a Verbena Bonariensis or whatever its called and I did not understand it. It was shooting out runners. I was terrified. I pulled out the runners and it barely came back the next year. Its still clinging on. And I'm sort of hoping its regaining its strength. It had 2 stems last year. Hoping for three this year

My local Garden Centre is a B&Q. Like the Convenience Store of plants. Won't sell you anything as a bare root they can't sell you 2 months later in a 2 litre pot.

  4. You only need 1 Erigeron since it spreads itself around like fun! It's literally everywhere in my garden after I planted a few tiny rooted pieces from my brother's garden💚

  5. "I love dais – IT'S SO WINDY!" Is such a beautifully wholesome interaction 😊 love this video, so much good information and well explained ❤️❤️

  6. I've got erigeron seeds, when would be the best time to direct sow these? Also have you tried yougarden online? I was amazed with the Astilbe bare roots I bought, they were huge!

  7. I do love how informative your videos are and in a way anyone can understand and follow. I’m looking forward to following you through the year ahead. 💕

  8. My montana never disappoints – I cut it back quite severe last year as it had really got huge – you should see it today, laden and I mean laden with buds!

  9. Loved this video! Lots of info, and ideas for planting schemes. You've inspired me to grow more from seeds. I've got loads, and some are a bit old. Will sow them, and see what grows. Will be a nice surprise! Happy gardening ❤

  10. Very informative video thank you. When is the best time to put hydrangeas in my beds? And when should we do our summer pots is it May? x

  11. Addicted to garden centres 😂 love buying a plant and splitting. Also this time of year, perennials starting to shoot, you can take cuttings from plant while still in the ground. I've done phlox, lychnis Maltese cross (which I bought from garden centre this morning)salvia caradonna, sedum and will do more as they come up. Get a sharp knife, find a lovely shoot, cut down into the ground next to the root ball and you should get shoot to pot up. Free plants, I love it!!!!! There's a video on YouTube, the perennial gardener showing how to do it. Good luck ❤

  12. You have given a great round up of plants. I think you should list the names of the plants. I missed some of them. Best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪

  13. What a brill video! You covered everything I needed to know. Thank you so much. I really appreciated the garden centre lookabout and what order to put them in the garden. I've got to get myself organised to sew seeds now, I can't be trusted going round the garden centres on my own 😂
