we recently purchased a house that has a tree we know nothing about but seems to have been neglected. a large branch snapped off in a windstorm a month ago and it seems like a few others may have the same fate. we don’t know what the type of tree is or how much we can remove without damaging it permanently

Is this not a locust tree? Honestly, I wouldn’t worry too much… it’s hard wood & hearty tree. I have two with some very pretty high & gnarly dead branches on otherwise healthy trees. Eventually I’ll have the dead ones cut back close to trunk. Are you parking under this tree?
