My daughter has been tending this African violet for the last three or four years, and it has thrived in the window in her room. We’ve transplanted it into bigger pots twice or three times. It’s been in a self watering pot for the last year and we fill it with water that we have mixed with African violet food according to the package instructions. It was full of blooms until a few months ago, and now it looks like it’s dying. We tried to remove the dead foliage but the stems are firmly attached and our efforts seem to have made things worse. The soil is absolutely sodden. Could the pot insert have failed in some way? What should we do?

Is it a trailer? In ceramic wicking pot? Dry soil not absorbing from reservoir?( Pot may need scrubbing to help clean the pores, so it can absorb water. They tend to get clog in time)
I would clean up all the dead part to see what you have left.
Water with room temp water inside the pot just enough to hydrate the soil. If stems are all still viable, repot in fresh mix.
I agree with Plantaehaulic
Get some fine tip clean sharp scissors and start snipping away all the dead.
Regardless, the remaining part needs to be in a much smaller container I think.
I also agree with the self watering pot may need cleaning up itself. I have a similar pot and a couple times the plant was not taking in water. The soil was dry. A little top watering helped get it started again.
Hard to say what happened here.
But really.. what you may have to do is cut all the remaining good leaves off and prop them. You can do it in soil or water. I’ve had success with both.
