Wife and I are struggling to keep our 9yr old cat from eating the spider plant. The second the office door is open she’s in there and goes at the plant then proceeds to puke it up 30 min later… fun times.

Yes, keeping the door closed is obvious but nobody is perfect, and getting some air flow in there is needed.

We can’t have a plant stand as she has also knocked that down with the assistance of the dogs.

Wife really enjoys having them and is wanting to give up on all of them (about 10+ total) because of this.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. TIA

maybe try hanging your spider plants? my cat was obsessed with mine until i put it in a macrame hanger near the window and now she can’t reach it.

I have a spider plant hanging from my ceiling and yet my cats still figure out how to nibble on her

  3. Spider plants are a hallucinogenic for cats. You’ll have to keep it out of reach.

Edit: I’m not yet aware of cat therapists or rehab facilities for your druggy cat.

    The other catnip.

Put it up high. Or get a glass case for the plants. My cats are trying to figure out how to flip the clip.

I hear foil works well too. I have not tried it.

Let the cat trip!! New growth will cover it

Hang it from the ceiling or get a glass cabinet you can put it in

I found that putting out cat grass that they can nibble on kept them away from my plants. Not entirely but it helped.

I also wipe the side of the planter with vinegar which sometimes helps because they don’t like the smell.

Any plants that I don’t want to risk I put in a place they can’t get.

Impossible 😩 I took mine to work, that helped lol

Get some cat grass for them. Cats usually eat plants to vomit out the fur and stuff, it’s good for them

I hung one and gave one to my cats. They don’t mess with the hanging one.

I put mine on the patio. It’s doing way better out there.

Maybe get one of those glass ikea type cabinets that people use as indoor greenhouses in which to put her plants. She can also add a plant light and humidity and have all kind sof fun plants. Otherwise I choose cats over plants and I say this as someone who converted her entire lawn into raised beds.

Had to put mine on the highest shelf, otherwise kitty will try to get high.

Yeah – I can’t have any plants that look like grass

Cat dad and have long had the same issue, ended up hanging mine or using a high shelf they can’t get to.

Cat also started to eat my dracaena reflexa within about an hour of me getting it in the house. So that’s been similarly elevated.

  15. Museum gum or command strip the plant stand to the ground? Could also drill/command strip shelves to the wall so theyre totally out of reach. Other posters have mentioned to hang it, theres also renter friendly/no screw options on amazon that you can just stick to your wall!

  16. Oh yeah. My Emmett, he’s totally addicted. Now he checks every plant to see if it makes him see music just like spider plants. I don’t even try to keep them anymore.

He loves spider plants so much that he will even eat the roots.

My spider plant is currently doing well in rehabilitation after being mauled by my cat. He loved it, he would eat it like it was his last day on earth, get high af and sleep.

I now keep it in the bathroom because the humidity is good and he isn’t allowed in there.

  18. I can’t have them because my cats just mow them down

Mine lives on the patio. I had it in the house when it was a baby and my cat ate it down to literally nothing. Lmao. She somehow got on the patio the other morning and ate some of it (the plant is now bigger than her). And threw it all up. Lmao. Not poisonous, but makes them feel like they did some drugs 🤣🤣

My cat used mine like her own personal salad bar.

I’ve had a spider plant over a decade that my cat repeatedly ate down to little nubs. My only solution was to give her a spider plant and cat grass of her own in a floor planter that I didn’t care if she ate. Yes, she puked back up. The spider plants are still alive and live on my front entry where she doesn’t have access.

Spider plants are similar to catnip for cats, they’re drawn to it and it gives them a mild high of sorts to chew the leaves.

  23. gormeh_sabzeh

Have you tried a hanging pot from the ceiling to keep it out of reach?

Spider plants get cats high lol so they’ll just keep trying to get access to the plant if they can

  24. beige-king

Spider plants are similar to cat nip I believe and makes them goofy. Cats are secretly drug addicts I guess. Hang it from the ceiling, it’s the only way I keep mine from my cats

  25. I just got rid of my spider plants because of this. Sick of cleaning up green vomit after my druggy cat chewed on leaves all night

My cats are always on the look out for a new way to get to my spider plant.
