With spring upon us and summer approaching, countless Brits are probably contemplating that first major mow of the season. Yet before achieving a pristine lawn, there’s one essential task requiring attention.
Glenn Peskett, DIY specialist at circular saw blade supplier Saxton Blades, is encouraging gardeners to carry out a “spring detox” on their machinery before making that initial cut.
He explained: “People spend all winter dreaming of that first fresh-cut grass smell, but they forget that their mower has been sitting in a cold, damp shed for six months.
“When you pull the cord on a blunt, dirty machine, you aren’t cutting the grass; you’re essentially ripping it out by its roots. It’s a traumatic start to the season for any lawn.”
If your mower has languished forgotten in the shed throughout winter, it’ll behave like blunt scissors, shredding grass and leaving your lawn vulnerable to disease and discolouration.

If you don’t check the mower first, you can end up with a patchy lawn
Therefore, before commencing mowing, Glenn is encouraging everyone to dedicate just 15 minutes to thoroughly inspecting your mower’s blades, reports the Express.

The initial check concerns the blade itself. With the spark plug disconnected, tilt the mower and examine the blades for dents and nicks. Should you spot any, the blade requires replacement.
Glenn’s second checkpoint involves the fuel. Petrol actually deteriorates, so if it’s been sitting in the tank throughout winter, it’s probably turned gummy.
This can block the carburettor, necessitating drainage and a fresh start.
It’s equally vital to clear away all the dried grass clippings accumulated beneath the mower.
Using a plastic putty knife, carefully scrape it clean to enhance airflow and achieve a neater cut.
Now is also the ideal moment to replace your air filter, as a clogged filter will starve your engine of oxygen. You can either tap it out to clean it, or fit a new one entirely.

Check the lawn mower before using it this spring.
