Some of my softneck garlic has started to split into multiple stalks. They are also enormous over 1.5 inches in diameter. They see way bigger than comparisons to videos on YouTube. Is this normal? It’s my first year growing garlic. Zone 10b Southern California. Yes, I planted individual cloves.

Thanks so much!

Edit: SOLVED by cjfb62 below. I did pull it because I was so curious. The bulb was over 3” wide. Each new clove sprouted by itself doing a "witches broom". I guess it's still edible but won't keep as long! Darn nitrogen levels and fluctuating temps!

Did it cross pollinate with a leek or something?

Ma’am I’m sorry to tell you that your garlic either has gigantism or that is not garlic 🤣

Update us when you pull it. Want to know what it actually is!

  7. This may be “witches broom” but I’m not sure because I’ve only seen it in my hard neck garlic.

Did you plant grocery store garlic? Might be elephant garlic which is actually a bulbing leek.

(I’ll let myself out, don’t worry)

I planted a lot of garlic and I’m looking at your leaves and thinking maybe I pulled it out bc I thought it was a weed. Ugh.

Wish I could say it was the first

I am so glad I read the comments and saw this isn’t garlic cuz I just panicked my garlic hasn’t been growing properly since it doesn’t look like this 😭😭

Did you plant a whole bulb? You’re supposed to separate the cloves and plant each one 3-6 inches away from the next one.

When recipes say to add 2 cloves of garlic, this must be the type of garlic they are referring to!

Looks like elephant garlic that’s been in the ground more than 1 season. The smaller side stalks could be corns from the main bulb.

Did you plant an entire head of garlic, rather than a single clove? 🙃
