I wanted to keep it as cheap as possible mostly because I’m broke and secondly because our home is on the market and didn’t want to drop a ton of money on something that doesn’t really add any extra value other than a better first impression. I included a before photo but basically what I did was remove the old stones first. Then kind of went back and cut out the grass and formed the walking path. I put a layer of landscaping fabric down to help with weeds,a layer of leveling sand, I then measured and placed the stepping stones out before pouring in the pea gravel to fill in the rest. I didn’t exactly level the sand I laid down but I did use a tamp to get it packed in as good as I could. Also at both ends of the walkway I’m worried I’m going to lose a lot of the pea gravel and send when it rains or just from normal foot traffic.

  1. Which is the before and which the after?

Because I kinda like the second photo better and I feel like that’s the before.

Landscaping fabric is so rocks don’t sink. It won’t stop weeds.

I think the walking stones are too far apart and too small. Return them and buy more stone. people don’t mind walking on stone. Women in heels might not. Or get more walking stones and put them closer together.

I prefer tighter spacing and smoother surfaces to accommodate small children and elderly gaits and mitigate tripping hazard.

Are those circular pavers still around? If so, I prefer them.

Also, straighten out your edges by the sidewalk. Use a long level, or even a 2×4

  6. It looks pretty good. It’s not going to stay in straight lines over time because those pavers are just set on the ground, right? Even if they are 1/2 in the soil, they’ll move. But… you don’t have to worry about it moving next year if you’re selling the house. Just be really careful if you need to mow. Maybe weed whack the 12″ closest to the pavers. The downside of making a super straight line is that it’s really obvious when something moves.

Did you also do the red ones in nearer the house? Those look nice too, but I’m curious why you did the path in a different color? Likewise with the stone, now that I’m thinking about it. I don’t love colored stone, but it seems like you should have stuck with the theme.

Did you fix the large dirt patch adjacent to the driveway? I don’t think the path, as nice as it is, is not going to draw the eye away from that.

Nice work, and great experience for a similar project at your *next* house!

I got that same exact pattern and at first I had them laid down just like that but then I realized they go in a perfect puzzle three at a time and connect tightly.
