COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – There’s a proven method to keep fire ants away from your garden.
It’s called the Texas Two-Step.
“Essentially, what those two steps are is a broad cast method that you would spread around your property, and that’s going to have effectiveness for about three to six months. Look at your labels,” said Jayla Fry with Texas A&M AgriLife.
The other product is a spot treatment.
“So you will occasionally have breakthroughs even after you’ve broad cast,” said Fry. “So you’ll use the bound treatment. Make sure you read the labels.”
Fry says these products are not necessarily meant for your vegetable gardens so you’ll want to look for an organic method.
She says one thing you can do is pour boiling water on a fire ant mound if it’s in your vegetable garden to remove fire ants.
