So I’m not even allergic to poison ivy, but something out here messed me up today. I went for a short hike and when I got back to my car, I rubbed my itchy sweaty eyes. Within minutes, my eyes swelled up. I had to go to the ER. My throat was a little scratchy and swollen but nothing drastic.

I used hand sanitizer that was at the trailhead bathrooms right before the hike. Then, I touched this plant which I’m pretty sure is sage and I have collected on trails around here before. But if it’s not sage and it’s something poisonous, I’d like to know that’s what caused this.

That does not look like posion ivy irritation. Plant could be rabbit bush? It’s part of the aster family which is notorious for allergic reactions, contact dermatitis, and pollen sensitivity. Possibly that combined with hand sanitizer resulted in the swelling around the eyes.

    Good luck!
