Did you know you can grow a full potato harvest using just a 5-gallon bucket? This simple container method is perfect for small spaces and requires no digging.

Start by drilling 8–10 drainage holes in the bottom of the bucket. Add about 4 inches of loose potting mix mixed with compost.

Place one seed potato (or two small ones) with the eyes facing upward, then cover with 3–4 inches of soil.

As the plant grows, you’ll use a technique called “hilling.” When the shoots reach about 6 inches tall, add more soil until only the top leaves are visible. Repeat this process until the bucket is nearly full.

This encourages the plant to produce more potatoes along the buried stems.

For best results:
• Keep the bucket in 6+ hours of sunlight
• Water when the top inch of soil feels dry
• Avoid too much nitrogen fertilizer, which promotes leaves instead of tubers

When the plant flowers and the leaves begin to yellow, it’s time to harvest. Simply dump the bucket and collect your potatoes—no digging required.
