DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – Spring is here, and it’s almost time to get back into the garden.

Sustainable gardening is a way to create a beautiful yard while saving money and protecting the environment.

Ray Wolf, a Scott County Master Gardener, recommends starting with simple steps like:

Improving soil with compostWatering more efficiently, only when needed, not on an automatic scheduleUsing rain barrelsPlant native speciesReduce chemical useConsider more sustainable equipment options, like switching to electric lawn equipment to cut down on pollution.

“You can still have a yard that looks really nice and attractive, and one that meets your needs, maybe gives places for kids and grandkids to play,” Wolf said. “It can also be a spot where you can produce food.”

The Hauberg Estate will host a spring native plant sale on May 23 and 24 in Rock Island.
