I’m in North Carolina and just getting ready for my first cut of the season. My lawn guy told me to keep it around 3 inches all year and just mow frequently, but I’ve been reading that Bermuda should be cut shorter.

My mower is an EGO (settings 1–6), and I think 3–4 is around 3 inches, but I’m not 100% sure yet (still checking the manual).

Right now the grass is a bit tall since I haven’t done the first cut yet. I’m thinking of starting higher and gradually bringing it down, but I don’t want to mess it up.

What height/settings do you guys recommend for Bermuda, especially for the first cut of the season?

yea first mow you wanna scalp bermuda, so cut it as low as your mower can go.

For a rotary mower like this you’ll probably want to maintain around 2″ or a little lower depending on how bumpy your lawn is, 3″ is really deep for Bermuda. Scalp it lower than that as it’s greening up, then once it grows more you can bump it up a notch and not see the brown mat of growth underneath all the time.

Additional note – don’t worry about messing anything up with mowing, you can beat the hell out of Bermuda and it’ll come back no problem.

The lowest you can without scalping. This depends on a lot of things. How often you water, mow, fertilize, how level your lawn is, the mower, etc

Just remember, the lower you cut, the more often you’ll need to cut.

You’re also probably going to want to leave yourself 1 extra notch lower. Sometimes Bermuda needs to be scalped back down.
