In his final days in office, former Mayor Eric Adams sought to shield Elizabeth Street Garden as NYC parkland, so that it couldn’t be developed into affordable housing. The garden has sat as a rare nature enclave in one of the busiest parts of Manhattan for decades. Mayor Zohran Mamdani must now decide whether to honor Adam’s move or press ahead with affordable housing plans as he promised to do so in his mayoral campaign. @AnnikaPergament explains.

  1. why do people act like affordable housing projects AND public green spaces can't go hand in hand? you guys realize that the future residential building can still be surrounded by the same exact public green space, right?

  2. Interesting these celebrities with mansions and millions of dollars in networth are protesting affordable housing projects for poor folks making lower than 80K in a year.
Pretty much it’s a spot rich bougie to sit around and walk their dog.

  3. Make housing and recreate the garden on the roof, also dig down and make it a real amazing place with a hill for a roof.

  4. This is a no brainer, our priority has to be to make MORE housing available, mamdani is right for this change idc what anyone says and i didn't even vote for him

  5. LMAOOOOOO im so happy that the same liberal neighborhoods who voted for him are crying about this

  6. I thought this was resolved. Stop this. Save the garden. This land was the school park for St. Patrick's. My mother was a student there. I love this park and go whenever I am in the neighborhood.

  7. It’s not a garden, it’s an eye sore. Build affordable housing for New Yorkers. People have been priced out of even the Bronx. It’s crazy.

  8. I don’t really care about celebrity perspectives on a matter that means nothing to them. Affordable housing is a must!
