I was planning on planting 9 green giants for privacy along this line. I dug out holes the size of a 5 gallon bucket spaced 12’ apart. Now I’m thinking these might be too close to the fence and I wonder if there’s future headaches these trees might cause. Please help! 7A

What is a green giant? Most trees could be pruned to avoid your fence

Plant something native and habitat support ing. Also don’t dig homes before the plants are ready to go in

Look up the ISA international society of arborists planting guide You do not want to dig a hole think like a wok. You are just asking for girdled roots. Especially if you’re thinking of green giant magnolias or honestly any other woody stemmed plant

Yeah, looks too tight for green giants. What’s the width there? You don’t want them against the fence when mature.

I wouldn’t plant arborvitae unless you plan on watering them regularly for the next 2-3 years.

They grow very large. Have you looked them up online to find out their usual height and width? They need to be planted no less than 5′ apart, but maybe 10′ for the larger variety would work better over time, so I’m guessing the distance from each other is fine as you’ve planted them.

BUT they are much too close to the fence and will push up against it badly before you know it. It’s almost as if you were not aware that trees grow in a circular 360º pattern and not just toward each other!

They are so big around that I’m not even sure they are the right trees for that location near the fence. Move them as far from the fence as you can manage toward that slope? Who doesn’t like digging holes anyway? Or as they grow, maybe remove (or move) the fence?
