Congratulations, you cat is teaching you about apical dominance, now that pesky top is off, which you can root by the way, it will put out side branches, or branch, that will all grow at the same rate until a new one asserts dominance.

Which part of the world are you?
I’ve tried to grow them twice now and every time it gets to about a foot it died. I’m wondering if where I live just doesn’t work.

Get a straw and cut an appropriate size , tape the stem up. Gentle tape, like for babies and slip the straw over the main stem. It looks small enuf to do that.

Just be patient and keep it watered as usual. Another sprout will come. Next time pinch it back in the middle leaf at about 6 inches to encourage branching and a thicker stronger trunk. I had it happen to me before. My Avocado tree is about 1 1/2 now.
