  2. And also, if you're a smoker or handle tobacco, don't touch the plants with your skin (hands), wear gloves. TMV(Tobacco Mosaic Virus) is incredibly resilient and stable and can live in dried tobacco for decades. It doesn't die when burned but is only transmitted by touch, not smoke. When a smoker handles a cigarette, the virus can transfer to their fingers. Because tomatoes and tobacco are both members of the Solanaceae (nightshade) family, they are susceptible to many of the same pathogens. Once infected, a tomato plant typically won't die immediately, but it will suffer significant damage in terms of health and productivity.

  3. April in warmer temperatures. Not in New England. In Maine after new moon in May. Don't plant any earlier or you have to cover plants when temperatures can drop to 30s.
