Garden Isle Bath & Body in Cloquet brings a taste of Hawaii to Minnesota with handmade, vegan-friendly skincare products. Fatima Avalos spoke with owner Cori Beck about their shared love for the islands and the inspiration behind the small business.

After moving to Hawaii in 2009, Cori began using Hawaiian and dead sea salt to make soaking salts for sore muscles. Her husband, Craig began selling her products to tourists coming in from the cruise ships and people couldn’t get enough, so she opened a storefront in Kauai.

Now, the Beck’s are back in their home state, bringing Garden Isle Bath & Body to Cloquet.

“Everything I make is vegan friendly ingredients. It was about over a decade ago, I stopped using silk aminos or powdered milk or regular whole milk. Everything’s natural here. It’s all really premium product ingredients.”

Beck sells over 60 products, including bug spray, facial cream, room spray, shampoo and conditioner. Her number one seller is a reef-safe sunscreen called Cocomac, made with unrefined cocoa butter and plankton.

“We do a lot of custom blending like with our sunscreen; I make that up. Still, we make a bowl by bowl. I don’t believe in doubling a recipe, so I make three or four bowls a week and I’ll put them out here on the shelf unscented. Then when a customer comes up, they’ll say, ‘I want cherry almond or I want pineapple.’”

While thousands of miles away from Hawaii, the spirit of Aloha continues to run deep.

“I mean, we try to lift each other up. We’re all in this together. I love what I do. They get so excited when they come in and they’re just like, ‘Can I get cherry almond this time?’”
