Gardeners’ World’s Monty Don is set to host a popular BBC programme for the first time.

The quiz show, Have I Got News For You, is set to return to BBC for its 71st series next month, celebrating 36 years of broadcast.

This long-standing current affairs quiz offers a blend of humorous commentary and scripted jokes, ranging from the satirical to the downright bizarre.

Each week, team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton are joined by a host of well-known faces as guest hosts and panellists, who bring a comedic twist to the week’s major news stories.

It has now been revealed that Monty will be the guest host for the second episode of the new series, marking his debut on the show, reports the Mirror.

The episode is scheduled to air on Friday, April 10, and can be viewed on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 9pm.

Comedian Chris McCausland will also feature as a guest panellist, making his eighth appearance on the programme. The final panellist is journalist and staff writer at The Atlantic, Helen Lewis, marking her 13th stint on the show.

This news follows Monty’s recent return to our screens with a brand new series of Gardeners’ World. The 70 year old has been a staple of the BBC programme for over two decades.

After a three-month hiatus during the show’s customary winter break, he returned alongside Adam Frost, sharing valuable gardening tips and showcasing their garden projects.

He confessed that filming the show from his Herefordshire home often feels akin to “going back to school”.

“I want people to think that the camera just turns up and follows me pottering around the garden, then we pop off to look at Adam (Frost) or Carol (Klein) doing something else, then after an hour we say bye bye,” he said.

“The reality is it’s quite a big production team. It takes weeks to prepare – two days to film, six days to edit. It’s full on. In-between filming, which we do two days a week, we then have to prepare the garden for what we’re filming thereafter.

“I brace myself. For the crew and I, it’s like going back to school.”

Discussing what makes British gardens so unique, Monty added: “The first is simply climate. We have the best weather. And although we complain about the weather all the time.

“It’s actually perfect for a wider range of gardening than any other country in the world. Our love of gardening comes a close second.”
