This tree was almost dead when we bought our home last year. We trimmed off everything dead and it’s starting to green up, but not sure it’s worth the effort. Is it some kind of willow? We are in Colorado for reference. Would love to see it come back. Thanks!

Depends what ur goals are. This is pretty typical willow behavior and it can live a long time like this. Since you removed the hazards of the deadwood and it is great for wildlife you can absolutely keep as is. But if you would rather replant a new tree because you arent a fan of the look thats totally reasonable

Dieback that severe is a sign the roots are diseased. Even some of the new little branches have died. I would remove the tree and start over.

Replace it with a tree species not susceptible to the kinds of pathogens that typically kill willows. Your county agricultural extension agent may have some advice on that front.

I am all for saving good trees…..but since you said you bought this property last year and I assume you are going to be there for a while…don’t feel bad cutting it down and replacing it if it’s in a prominent spot and you don’t want to look at the ugly.
