This is a mature ash tree in the Chicagoland area. It is an integral part of the deck ambiance and has been very healthy. We have been treating for emerald ash borer since their introduction many years ago. It is 18” in diameter. Today I noticed this hole at the base apparently made by some critter. The center of the tree is hollow. What is advised?

Hollow trees are common and often still surprisingly strong. Looks like the soil under the deck got piled up around the trunk and allowed some decay to set in. Pull the dirt back from the trunk until you start to see roots getting exposed. Also, make sure the trunk has space to grow wider where it passes through the deck.

Looks to me like the center had been damaged and dead for some time judging by the scarring. Id say keep leaves and debris away from the trunk, looks like youre doing that already. And keep an eye on the overall health (nutrients and pruning) itll last many years
