Lil update on my first paludarium. I’m in the process of painting the background (EPS foam I cnc’d from meshes I collaged in Rhino). It’s coated in drylok and on top is non-toxic acrylic. I have this stump I found while hiking—what’s the best process for preparing it for the setup? I want some of the roots to creep over the land/water barrier for a river edge effect. I’ve also been getting a lot of conflicting advice on soil. If I wanted to go the direction of false bottom with a pump pulling water through a drainage layer, what soil would be appropriate above? The layers would be filter foam, gravel, geotextile barrier, then soil… all of which is contained by a partially perforated acrylic wall. The goal is for the plant roots to aid filtration for a slightly less maintenance-heavy setup. I’m hoping to house a salamander or newt depending on the water level (which probably is important to know for soil moisture/humidity). The tank is a 33 gallon long (48”) from marketplace. I also have a secondhand canister I can use but I don’t want to drill the tank. Thank you in advance!
