With the clocks set to change shortly and sunshine making a welcome return, many of us are eager to get back outdoors as quickly as possible. Yet one hurdle gardening enthusiasts frequently face following a prolonged, damp and chilly winter is a lawn that’s seen better days.

It’s an issue I face every spring, with insufficient sunlight leaving my grass looking rather dejected. Fortunately, it’s easily remedied with some grass seed – and I’ve discovered a remarkable offer that means there’s a way to secure a 1.5kg box for under £1.

The normally retails at £16 from B&Q. However, there’s a little-known offer that will effectively reduce the cost to just 73p.

This comes through the money-saving platform TopCashback, where new members receive a £15 welcome cashback bonus when they spend £15 at a participating shop. This means that for new TopCashback members and all B&Q shoppers the final cost works out at 73p, once cashback is factored in.

B&Q states the box has an average total coverage area of 60m2 and is “durable and hard wearing”. Young grass should start appearing within one to two weeks, whilst the non-perennial ryegrass mixtures can take 14-21 days, reports Wales Online.

Customer feedback received so far has been largely very positive. One reviewer said: “Bought this to patch in areas where the dogs have been running. Spreads well, noticed growth about two weeks later so really happy.” Another customer praised: “Great coverage and good growth. Great colour and time to germinate was shorter than the box said. We’ve given it three cuts and it looks good. Versatile for dogs and kids.”

A third reviewer commented: “Excellent seed, took around 6 days to germinate and now we have a lovely lawn.” A further buyer noted: “This grass seed is great quality and very fast growing. Highly recommend and worked out at a good price compared to other brands.”

Whilst most reviews were glowing, some concerns were raised, with one purchaser stating they were “very disappointed with the result”. Another customer knocked off stars, explaining they were “waiting for results”.

Alternative grass seed products are widely available, including Pronto Seed, where a 1.4kg container of Pronto Seed, providing 84m2 coverage costs £14.49. It’s described as “durable” for high-traffic zones and suitable for dogs and cats.

Meanwhile, Wickes offers Gro-Sure’s Shady Lawn Seed, specifically formulated for low-light conditions. Though a 300g £9 packet only covers 10m2, making it more expensive than typical varieties.
