Carrot flowers are pretty if they do bolt
Wow! You had great success with your Winter sowing! As long as you don't get a frost they will be alright without the lids. I did not know you could transplant carrots. I thought all root crops have to be directly seeded? I have had 0 success with winter sowing poppies for the last three years.
I have a huge patch of cilantro…it never died over the Winter. That butterfly is beautiful. I bet he did just hatch. You made a Butterfly Haven and you can tell he is a native. 💖
Oh wow, the way you said “First time WINTER SOWING RESULTS + Zebra Swallowtail” made me laugh so hard I nearly slid off my chair because goodness, that unlocked a memory so chaotic I still feel the frostbite in my soul. One winter I decided I was going to “embrace nature” and try winter sowing like those calm, serene gardeners online, and oh my, I marched outside with milk jugs, seeds, and confidence so loud even the snowflakes were like “Ma’am… please.” I planted everything, closed the lids, whispered “Alright Luise, this is your moment,” and walked back inside feeling like a pioneer woman. Then spring came. I ran outside all excited, opened the jugs and *good grief*, half the seedlings looked like they had survived a war, the other half looked like they were writing their wills. I just stood there whispering “Huh… is this normal?” while my inner voice was like “Girl, you basically created a tiny frozen daycare.” And don’t even get me started on the Zebra Swallowtail. One landed in my yard once and I screamed “Oh my!” so loudly my neighbor thought I’d won the lottery. I chased it around like a confused toddler, trying to take a picture while it fluttered away with the elegance of a creature that knew I was not worthy. But honestly, that’s the magic of winter sowing and early pollinators. It’s messy, unpredictable, hilarious, and somehow deeply healing. You learn patience, timing, hope, and the art of celebrating tiny victories even when everything looks like botanical chaos. So your title made me smile because behind every “first time winter sowing results” is someone who has absolutely fought the elements, doubted their sanity, and still ended up with a story worth telling.
Good Morning Kaye. I love the sound of those bells too! Just hyped you!🐶🐕😎
Thanks so much for the updates on your winter sowing project – some successes and some losses as expected. I didn't think carrots liked to be transplanted as I tried that before and they really didn't produce as they should so now I just wait until it's time to plant outdoors.which is like now for me. Most of my plants are still indoors as I want to be more sure about the unpredictable weather so I don't have to start over. Thanks for the list of intermediate onions you are growing as I had a hard time finding those varieties. We are in the 50's today with some sun so hope I can get things organized in my greenhouses. Happy planting…
Good Day !!! Looks like success with most it. I have herbs & ornamentals ready to transplant soon. Black Eyed Suseis in Florida were a seed from a pod of seeds. They were a vine & the seed was red with a black eye like a black eye pea. Up in Tennessee their a flower. Let the season begin ! Hope you have great success this season.
Kaye will you please share where you gathered the information that the DHS issued the warming for water storage. ???
Plant the poppies in clumps, don't separate them. They are prolific. You got great results with your winter sowing. You should see how we fare in cold Canada if you want to feel better about your results. Oh and zinnias grow so fast, just sow them directly.
🌱🌿👍🙂
