With a brutal New England winter in our rearview mirror and a rather temperamental spring underway, why not think ahead to trips to take this summer in Vermont?

Luckily, Shelburne Museum is opening May 9, 2026, just in time to celebrate the coming summer warmth. It was rated as the best garden in Vermont by Home and Garden Television.

HGTV named what they think is the best garden in every state in the United States. According to the list, released in August 2025, Vermont’s top garden is only 30 minutes away from Burlington.

“We love gardens of all shapes and sizes (and know you do too!)” HGTV said. “And we just want to be sure you don’t miss any icons that could be right under your nose — or on your travel itinerary — when time is a finite resource.”

Here’s the Vermont garden HGTV called a must-visit.

Shelburne Museum — Shelburne, Vermont

HGTV chose the Shelburne Museum’s gardens because of its cultural value as a center for historical preservation as well as its green fields and diverse flora.

Here’s what HGTV said about it: “A collector’s paradise spread across 45 acres, where 39 historic buildings have been relocated to create a campus dedicated to American folk art and horticulture. The garden’s historic apple varieties preserve New England’s agricultural heritage.”

Shelburne Museum has several different gardens to explore, from the formal and vivid Bostwick Garden to the Circus Building Daylily Garden, where well over 1,700 daylilies in 38 varieties reside, the Shelburne Museum website said.

“In the spring hundreds of lilacs and peonies fill the air with perfume, and in the summer thousands of daylilies nod in the breezes off the lake,” the museum’s website said of the gardens. “Perennial and annual flower gardens, herb and heirloom vegetable gardens, and flowering fruit trees flourish through the fall.”

Still closed for the season at the time of writing, Shelburne Museum can be found at 6000 Shelburne Road in Shelburne, Vermont.
