Spring has officially arrived, prompting gardeners to tackle various outdoor tasks to enhance their spaces. However, one unexpected job worth considering involves placing a pair of tights outside – as peculiar as that might sound.

If you’re seeking a garden trick to implement this March, you may be surprised to learn that old tights deserve a place outdoors, and there’s sound logic behind it. What many don’t realise is they offer practical applications, so rather than discarding them when they’re too worn to wear, simply relocate them to your garden.

This isn’t the only surprising item gardeners have been advised to use outdoors recently, either. Just weeks earlier, people were also told to position wine corks outside as well.

A gardening enthusiast, known as View from the Potting Bench on TikTok, recently demonstrated clever ways to utilise them. He described the techniques as utterly “ingenious”.

As somebody who appreciates an effective garden solution, he felt the tips were too valuable not to pass on. Regarding tights, they actually offer multiple brilliant outdoor applications.

He explained: “Start off by cutting off each individual leg from your pair of tights. Once you’ve got the legs off like this, you can use them in multiple ways.

“Now, I like to then cut this into strips to use as tree ties. These are strong enough, but also flexible enough, to tie around trees to stop them blowing over and protect them from high winds.

“The tree ties are good, but this next use is a game changer. This is going to help keep your shed nice and tidy.

“Cut a small hole in the top of the leg of the tights, and then hang it on your door. Then you can slide all your pots in, organised nice and neatly, and it stops them rattling around in your shed.

“Once I’ve done that, I cut off the bottom of the tights, and then you can pull out the pots from the bottom when you’re ready to use them. When you buy new plants, and you’ve got loads more new pots, you can simply pop them in the bottom.”

What makes them useful for gardening?

You might be surprised to learn that worn-out tights serve numerous purposes in the garden. They’re perfect for outdoor applications thanks to their flexible, gentle and hard-wearing properties, making them brilliant for securing plants and safeguarding harvests.

Typical applications include fashioning delicate plant supports, creating hammocks for weighty produce like melons, storing onions or garlic and lining drainage holes in pots to retain compost. Their versatility extends far beyond what you’d expect.

So there’s no need to discard them once they’ve seen better days. They can be repurposed for countless superior alternatives instead.

One person commented: “Brilliant idea. Thanks!” Another viewer posted: “Clever.”

A third also remarked: “I use them for drying onions. Drop them in the legs with a knot in between, then hang them up.”
