My wife and I are buying our first home on approximately 3.5 acres in central New Jersey. A wonderfully rural area and the lot is a nice mix of mowable grass, a small pond, and some trees. The driveway isn’t particularly long, maybe 100 yards. We’ll be doing our fair share of work around the yard and I’ll be splitting some wood.
I have a late 90’s EZGO workhorse (gas) golf cart with a manual dump bed, and also a John Deere x580 mower.
Do you think the cart is overkill for this property? I should add – I’m in my late 30s and physical exercise is important to me.

So you’re looking to upgrade to a gator?
Not overkill
I think a golf cart is the right size. Even with more, I think the main focus should be safety. I don’t doubt everyone’s driving ability, but I’ve had several relatives roll/crash their gator going 40+ because they believe it handles like a car. Whereas my relatives who own golf carts seemingly have less issues. Anecdotal but just throwing it out there!
Nah- I wouldn’t say so. If you feel like loading up firewood, stones, brick, mulch, cleared brush- you’ll be happy you have it!
Totally fine and a great vehicle. We have an electric one it’s like zero maintenance
A golf cart would have been nice when I was on just 2 acres lol.
We have 5 acres of land that we maintain and another 4 that are wooded. Most days I manage just fine with my mower and simple dump trailer, but I definitely prefer my wheel barrow and legs for most things. However, as a mid 30s guy myself… having that golf cart for the longer days or just for future older me would be an absolutely killer addition to the homestead.
I figure a gator would be overkill but what you have would be perfect. Most of my choices come down to what makes the least amount of noise. I like my quiet after a decade of training dogs
I always heard that golf carts can make you fat.
I would like a golf cart for my 6.5 acres… granted I dont feel like spending much for one
I have 20 acres and it was cheaper to buy a crappy truck and register it as farm use.
Oh hell no. Not overkill.
No.
You do you. If you want one, get one.
You already have it so might as well keep it! If in a year you realize you’re not using it enough you can always sell it at that point
I have three acres and bought a 4 ton excavator. No such thing as overkill, only not enough.
I just drive my mower around.
Not if you build some jumps.
I have 3 acres and use mine all the time.
You need to trick that out.
I love my stupid golf cart more than anyrhing on my 7acres its a workhorse
Man I would do almost anything to have a golf cart on my property. I’m a former northeasterner and nothing beats day drinking on a golf cart. But it’s just not practical, or at least that’s what my husband says. I say do it # yolo
My “land” is measured in square feet and I’d still get one
Great for both of you on 3 acres, especially getting the mail on a crappy day.
You can use it for what you need and then walk/carry for what you don’t and prefer the exercise. There is usually plenty of both types of work to do. I wouldn’t want to carry a bunch of bags of compost or fertilizer across 2 acres. But I would carry the shovel to go do some weeding. Like 75% of our neighbors have a golf cart, that’s all they drive half the summer 😂
I think its overkill but my dad has one and im glad he does because hes getting older.
Im in my 30s and have a 30 acres homestead and havent gotten a cart because i believe move it or lose it!
Different strokes for different folks. If you desire it, have it! Life is short!
Nah. Golf cart is perfect for running around small acreage. Side by sides are definitely overkill.
