Noticed this tree near work today. iPhone identifies it as poplar, but I don’t know if that is correct. The bark has shed into piles at the base of the tree.

What causes this to happen? This seems bad. My main question is…how bad? How bad of shape is this tree in?

I’d be more worried about those black marks right side of first photo. Those are wierd.

My trees do that when something goes after the bugs inside the bark of a dying tree. Everything dies. It’s possibly home to lots of organisms at present. If it’s not in danger of hitting a structure just leave it and enjoy nature’s process

    That tree is extremely dead

It’s tree shaped, and will remain tree shaped until its branches rot and fall off.

In The Wizard of Oz, when the coroner opens his scroll and sings his little song, that applies here too.

That bark makes great veneer for birdhouses

I’m not an arborist either. I just today had to cut up a move a tree that looked just like that. It fell over onto my neighbor’s yard.
It was so rotten it was quite light.
