Hello all,

My echeveria is really elongated and I want to propagate and cut off the top so I can repot that. I’ve done some research and I know I need to give it more light, but I’m not sure how to go about cutting it. I already removed some leaves (want to propagate those), but I want to cut off the head, repot that, but still keep the stem part and see if anything grows from that (??). Is that possible?

The plant is also unable to support its own weight which is another reason why I want to cut the top off. Whenever I mess with my plants/repot it, I always end up with a dead plant so I’m hesitant to touch it.

I would appreciate any tips on how to safely cut and repot the top, and if I can keep the stump/stem to have new leaves. Thank you!

Usually you cut around 3 cm to 5 cm below the rosette, let it calloused for 2-3 days and then pot it in grit (mix of perlites and pumice, very little organic soil) water the soil, not the rosette, after 3-5 days. This is what I did with my Echeveria, the rosette is doing great.

Your soil in the pic is a little too organic 🥹 you can add a top dressing of grit. Other than that, just leave it alone when you’re done 🙂

    Yes, completely possible.

I would cut off in the middle of the thickest part of the stem, so there’s enough to bury and then let it callous for a couple of days before repotting.
