In this episode, I unexpectedly stumbled upon the Japanese Garden at California State University, Long Beach. This visit wasn’t planned—I was simply wandering the campus grounds while my son was participating in an acoustic guitar competition. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the university, the garden offered a peaceful retreat from the surrounding activity.
While the overall grounds were impressive, what truly caught my attention was the university’s bonsai collection. There are several noteworthy trees with strong potential and good foundational structure. However, it was clear that many of them are in need of refinement and ongoing professional care.
After speaking with one of the groundskeepers, I learned that the bonsai are currently maintained by volunteers, without guidance from a professional bonsai artist. I shared that with proper direction—whether through professional assistance or advanced bonsai club members—the collection could truly become something classic and exceptional.
This episode is not a critique, but an observation and an expression of possibility. With the right support, these trees could evolve into an inspiring educational and cultural bonsai collection within the university setting.
Thank you for joining me on this unexpected bonsai discovery.
