I have no idea how to speed this up haha. mostly leaves/cardboard and banana peels/leaves. Unfortunately it's Illinois so it's pretty cold still but I'm still looking to speed up decomposition. What should I change to make it better? does it just need time?

Needs urea. It’ll speed it up and warm the pile which will make the fermentation more active.
It looks dry and it sounds like you need green stuff. If you don’t want to pee in it, get used coffee grounds. They will have the moisture and add nitrogen. That should get things going nicely.
If you could get coffee grounds from a cafe it would speed that process right up. I went to my local starbucks and asked at the counter. They said sorry, they don’tkeep grounds for gardeners because there isn’t much demand. But actually since they have to keep green waste separate for pickup, they had whole garbage bags in their green waste bins that were mostly grounds. I had to pick out some plastic teabag packets and other packaging but not too much. I left the coffee filters in. Great stuff for compost!
Needs 5 more months
