When I started gardening I went to the big box store and wasted a couple hundred dollars on terrible products. In this video, I’ll show you how to avoid my mistakes.
There’s so many garden products out there, it’s hard to know which is best. Sadly, a lot of them like Roundup and Peat Moss actually harm the environment. But don’t worry, there’s better products out there.
From Builder’s Paper to Sand, products you might’ve never thought to put in the garden can be lifesavers! I’ve learned these swaps over the years and now it’s time to share so you don’t waste your money like I did😬

Excellent video! Thank you!
not been in a hd for decades. i feels great
I use cages made from concrete remesh for my tomatoes. Those cone shaped cages are good for peppers though.
It's time consuming but I have used old newspapers from the my local newspaper. I wet them and lay them in overlap them and then I put straw on them but I will be going and buying me a roll of that builders paper at my age it'll be a lot easier thank you so much
… sand mixed with clay and water makes something just short of concrete. Never add sand to your soil.
💚
What kind of sand is not toxic? Not easy to get in my local store. Is the same sand for the playing area for children?
As much as Bayer / Monsanto as paid in lawsuits for health and deaths from using or eating produce with glyphosate, I can't believe Roundup is still being sold! Plus Bayer, yes the aspirin company, pays for premium space in all retail stores. Yes, this is a thing!
Sand is actually a finite resource, ask any glow blower and they’ll never stop talking about it
👍
Doesn’t matter because it’s in the air, ground and water
im cutting thru the previous owners landscape cloth and yes she had weeds and didnt pull them. i got the HOA letter
i just bought worm casting
Thanks for sharing. May be I will garden again
I live in Canada and peat moss is responsibly managed and renewable.
Earthworm catings are so expensive
Thank you for the great tips!
I can't believe you are talking shit about home depot while at home depot. Are you afraid you are going to get thrown out?
If you add sand, even coarse sand, to a clay soil you just turned it into something akin to cement. The other benefit of peat moss is it retains moisture and sand does the opposite, allowing moisture to slip by easily. Coconut coir is a good substitute for peat moss but the best thing to do is keep adding compost and other organic materials to your soil and it will get softer and better and more full of carbon and you'll never need peat moss.
At 20 to $40 per trellis for the tomatoes that would be way too much money for two little benefit. We prefer making a trellis out of electrical conduit also sold it Home Depot. Ours are going on almost 20 years in their fraction of the cost. Cut to the right height for you as Gardner and a variety of options. You could either use the vertical conduits to do a Florida weave or you can drop strings from the horizontal top bar to support the plants below. And by the way, tomato cages are actually pretty decent for determinate tomatoes. These a bush type tomatoes, not the vining kind, and only grow 3 to 5 ft and they don't need to be pruned so the injections while accurate for cherries and indeterminate tomatoes, don't hold up for determinates.
What will kill poison ivy?
Do not add sand to heavy clay soil unless you want bricks.
Honestly I tried that builders paper…it didn’t work for me. But I appreciate n respect your advice 🙏
My grandfather had a farm in the middle of East Texas pine trees 5 mi from the road. The fields for solid sand. He grew peanuts every 3 years and turned them under. That was his fertilizer.
Reminded me that I need to order my paper rolls. 😂
A FREE ALTERNATIVE to "Builder's Paper* ….is FREE LARGE CARDBOARD from Costco and Sam's Club 😁 Usually found on skid's of products.
There is a responsible place for synthetic fertilizers in the garden. Nothing is a one size fits all. Bashing Miracle Grow unilaterally is not responsible. JMO. Follow the gardening science
Hi, QUESTION??? Can you tell me what zone you live in? I’m in zone 8b. 😊
Not bad information but some of it is not exactly useful. Worm castings are wonderful, bagged in a plastic bag and sold commercially and much of the benefits are destroyed. I don't use tomato cages and I can't buy 50 of those trellis for my plants, many other ways to stake plants. I'm surprised she didn't say buy 20 yards of good compost and use it instead of fertilizer, try and source good compost, you're very lucky if you find any. I'll never be "organic" although I am as close as I'll ever get. As for adding sand, too many growers advise against it, when it's mixed into soil and watered it can compact as well, just think of the beach when the tide is low, you can drive a bus on that sand. I do agree we should never use up glyphosate. So good job.
Time is running out with peat? Can you share your source of information then. Likely not.
Sand is good if you are making cement. I wouldnt use it in my garden beds.
A better alternative to barrier cloth or builder's paper to control weeds is natural mulch. Grass clippings clean from herbicides and pesticides and shredded leaves are free. They really smother weeds, maintain soil moisture meaning less watering to name 1 of many benefits. Great soil builders as another. Your gardens microbes and beneficial bacteria will thank you for it. Builders paper not for me.
Earth worm castings is a great soil builder but extremely expensive for what you get. That bag has a NPK ratio of 1.25-0-0. Extremly low.
I’m immediately turned off by the word organic..
I have multiple compost boxes. I dump all my fruit and vegetable scraps there, with egg shells, coffee ground, shredded papers, and shredded leaves. Worms love it. It all goes into my garden when ready.
I walk through the woods and carry my pruners. I will collect broken branches and cut off the sides leaving me 4 – 6 foot long stakes, perfect for tomatoes, pole beans and cucumbers. Metal or plastic get way too hot in my state and burn vegetables.
Organic is just a bunch of BS
I love Home Depot, and I love veggie gardening. And I spend as little money at HD on gardening supplies as I can. All those stores want you to spend lots of money on useless crap that you don’t need. Try to use your own compost from home. Don’t buy bagged soils, but buy it in bulk. And I’d certainly never use any Miracle Gro products.
This woman doesn't know much about gardening and soil content. Damn libs and there green bullshit!
Why not ,it works for meeee
I don’t do organic gardens I just garden with whatever I want
Great video. Love the content as well as the docent. Only thing I slightly disagree is about peat vs sand. Most people argue between peat and coir, and it's interesting to see yours is peat vs sand. My perspective is that peat contains at least a little bit of nutrients. As for sustainability or impact on the environment, I can assure you it is better than coir and it actually helps the environment in the long run. So far more than 85% of the peat has not even been touched in Canada (hard to believe huh?), and it does grow 70% more than it gets harvested each year, so yes, peat is extremely sustainable. Also when it gets harvested, the matting of the peat gets uncovered, releasing the suffocated bogs to the environment so they can breathe. Overall, it brings so many positive aspects and it nearly has no negative aspect. If you want me to write about peat vs coir, I could write a page long article and you'll never use coir again. But sand… Sand is ok. It's very neutral, and like you said, its everywhere and it does not require any processing.
Either way, I love this video, so I subscribed.
"Organic" is mostly a scam. Do not make decisions based on whether some practice is organic or not.
I'm not sure where you are, but here in the Southeast the paper doesn't last but a month or two. Then the weeds grow like crazy.
Weed fabric works really well, but you don't just put it down and hope for years of no weeds. I plant my summer garden into it, and when they are done, I remove the fabric to reuse next spring. Winter crops are more manageable without it, because most of the weeds go dormant.
I only use round up on poison ivy. But vinegar is not harmless as people think. Not only it kills the weeds, but also all the life biology. Pulling weeds is the best. Or smothering with fabric or cardboard.
Also, synthetic fertilizers, when used as recommended are not bad. They are way more affordable than most organics. If you have a small garden, you can use worm castings etc. But try to do it on a large scale and see how much you have to pay.
Organic😂🤣😂🤣 more like , buy this organic stuff so we can make more money off of you. ALSO CHOP UP CARDBOARD AND WORK IT INTO YOUR SOIL, PERFECT WORM FOOD ‼️ I’ve BEEN DOING IT FOR YEARS, WORM POPULATION BOOMED , WORKS EXTREMELY WELL, CHOP UP SMALL!
I ALSO USE SHREDDED PAPER FROM MY OFFICE PAPER SHREDDER, EXCELLENT SOURCE AS WELL, WORM FOOD. I JUST TILL IT INTO MY GARDEN BEDS ‼️🤣CHEAP FOOD AND REALLY FERTILIZER
Any credibility this lady had went out the window when she said sand can replace peat moss.
