Why can’t I plant this?

  1. Because they want you to buy more instead of having your own plant that constantly makes new herbs.

A friend said they are stored in fridges and that basically stops them successfully being transplanted. No idea if it’s true but honestly I kill even ‘proper’ basil so I am persisting in my attempts.

You absolutely can plant it. Once you get a few growing, just snip off a few leaves, leaving the stem and put them in water to propagate them. They’re pretty hardy.

I’ve planted and kept Basil like this before, it survived for over a year

Some growers spray or dip the roots with hormones that prevent the plant from growing. If you want to plant it, take part of it, rinse it well with cool water, plant it in a pot with rooting hormones, and place it near a window but not in direct sunlight.

If it has been stored cold, it has to be slowly warmed and hardened off from no sun light to sunlight very slowly. If you have not done this before, look up “hardening off seedlings” for more info online. You may or may not have success with store bought produce. Good luck and happy planting 🙏🦋

No reason not to. FWIW though, seeds are cheap, and basil is super easy to grow from seeds.

These are hydroponically grown. If you plant it in soil, it could get bad transplant shock. It might work, but failure rate would probably be higher than if you transplanted soil grown basil.

You totally can plant it. It is toward the end of a very stressful time of its life so it might bolt quite quickly, but they’re self pollinating so …seeds!

  9. Lizardgirl25

You can plant it… I did that before lasted until it go to cold in late fall.

Because it has to be clearly labelled because if it’s not, the producer would have to have the relevant licenses to be a garden nursery and there might be a whole list of rules about how the plants meant to be grown have to be prepared for sale, but they only want to be in the business of food production.

Everybody needs to stop the conspiracy-mindedness this has to do with the producer keeping the cost down by only having to set up their facilities to meet regulations for food production. You can do whatever the hell you want with the plant.

Definitely plant. I do this all the time.

I also just did this with rosemary from the grocery store too. Placed 6 cuttings in a glass bowl, forgot about them for a week, and boom, 3 plants! 50% success rate.

I’m guessing they want you to consume this, but also if you thought this was a good choice or way to get basil at least they warned you it wasn’t. Planting this will likely work a little, but you will have limited success as the plant transitions from hydroponic to dirt.
I would say thumbs down just to stop people contacting me because planting it didn’t work. I don’t think there is a basil cartel trying keep you from getting neverending basil.

  13. It’s one of those basil plants that wants to die. Tough childhood. Years of drugs and alcohol. Ripped from the only farm it knew as home. Now alone. Destitute. It simply cannot go on.

  14. mmoffitt15

This plant is owned by the company that grew it. You didn’t buy the “rights” to grow it. If you are using it at home, no one will ever know it. If you start to sell plants they could come after you for stealing.

No one would ever do that so you can just plant it.

  15. fungus909

They probably modified it so it can’t keep growing

  16. Once you get it growing, don’t let it go to seed. Pinch off any buds. You want it to keep making leaves for you.

  17. ashwheee

I’ve kept and grown these for months until I forgot to water it and it died. You can totally plant them lol

  18. mrlunes

You can drop a stem in some root hormone to see if it takes off. I assume they don’t want you to have an infinite supply so you buy their $7 packs

Because you’re spending your time on Reddit!

Ive tried many times and never been successful. They live,  but dont thrive… so I never had a large enough plant to harvest from.

    HOWEVER!

One of my transplants dropped seeds, which organically turned into the “basil bush”. I spent a whole summer pulling leaves off of this thing for everything I thought of. By the time fall rolled around, I cut the thing down with tree poppers, processed the leaves into pesto, and froze about 4 dozen ice cubes of pesto for future use.

No reason not too, the cold storage and general process of producing Basil for this type of sale is not like home gardening and might make it not conducive realistically to replant . A lot of this is hydroponic now I believe . But you should absolutely try to throw it in a pot vs rot it ina fridge

  22. Remarkable_Peach_374

    Money less for corporation

  23. Kenshirome83

They have to specifically say it is a plant/plant product not for propagation because of legal reasons

  24. gingerbeefbadteeth

They probably didn’t wanna pay to spray it with growth inhibitors and now they are panicked 😂

  25. Remarkable-Power-149

I have these in my herb garden some of them are three seasons old.

  26. Sea_Yogurtcloset48

Aside from them wanting you to buy more, which is absolutely a thing, these don’t usually grow very well if plated anyway as they’ve been grown hydroponically, so they’re used to receiving all their nutrients in their water root system, and under grow lights. If you can replicate that it might work. If you plant it in dirt, the roots will be shocked (more than they already have been from being picked and packaged) and unlikely to get everything they need and they’ll likely just die.

  27. codenameharvest

I side with those who say it keeps money flowing in the pocket of the producer/supplier

  28. crinnaursa

You can. The last grocery store basil I planted actually lasted two years.

  29. csvega84

Disregard. Plant literally everything you can. I use rooting powder to propagate everything i want. I have a pineapple that’s 2 ft tall that was just the top of one from the store.

  30. TheNamelessLad

Just make sure if youre gunna plant it outside.. had it in shade and gradually move it into the sub, so it doesnt get a sun burn!

  31. Basic_Tyez

Because it’s still in the plastic container. You gotta take it out of there first.

  32. DebraBaetty

Crazy too bc its says “living lasts longer than cut”

  33. Ichthius

Nothing is stopping you. Basil does great from cuttings and plant the roots.
