I accidentally picked up a weird seedling at Tapia Brothers Tomatomania this weekend, does anybody know if there are any Black Sea Man plants left there so I can go back and get the real thing?

Also does anybody think this freaky "sunflower"-format seedling is worth planting out? It seriously just terminates in a flat stem and a double blossom.

For nothing other than the curiosity, go for it and keep us posted. I’d have to check the gene database, but you might have a novel mutant on your hands.

  2. I believe determinant tomatoes grow like that — the flowers actually grow higher than the “main growing point” and on some tomatoes it’s normal to get a “megabloom” or something as the first flower. I am wondering if this is a determinant tomato that had a “megabloom” and accidentally got topped? IIRC determinant tomatoes won’t grow out a sucker like an indeterminate but I could be wrong

I’ve seen a Cherokee Purple that terminated in a megabloom like this. I would not expect Black Sea Man to do this normally. Just a fluke. Fortunately, the Cherokee Purple I had produced suckers and the plant did produce a good amount of fruit.
