In this video, I show how to make a premium potting mix go 20% further and improve it overall by adding two common backyard ingredients most people have on hand. This potting mix hack and tips save money and make your potting mix last longer. I also demonstrate how to use this mix to repot a plant and sow some seeds.

  1. It's really hard to know what is a 'better' mix, until you buy at least one to check. The 'label' on the bags dont help at all.

  2. Safety Officer here! I must object to the no gloves with those sticks in the mix……I always wear gloves for doing this, those sticks go right up into the fingernails.

  3. Hi Mark, are you able to share what absolutely basic things a clueless beginner Gardner can start to grow? We have lawn currently. I am thinking root veggies potatoes ect , lettuce, cumber and tomato when in season to start. We have land, but I have no clue. We have clay soil, or fertile but Soggy bogged soil. Thank you, Jen

  4. I always get awesome simple tips from you when I watch your vids. Great to have a good Aussie gardening channel to refer to & yours is the best! I'm gradually turning from a brown thumb that killed everything into a green thumb! YAY! 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

  5. Love watching your videos. I live in the same area as you so I find your videos extra helpful because I know what you are doing I can or should be doing as well for my garden. Plus unlike other youtubers there is no fluff click bait to your videos. Just relaxing videos that share knowledge. I can tell you love what you do as it comes through the videos. I hope you keep it up for a long time.

  6. I have a good potting mix for you.
Collect Rosewood Seeds, soak them and wring them out, dry them out and grind them up.
Buy some Crustacean Meal, Kelp meal, Gypsum, Basalt, Volcanic Dust and some Lava Rock
Add 1 cup of each amendment and 2 cups of each mineral to 1 cubic yard (under 8 gallon) mix 1:1:1 of leaf mould, lava rock, compost/vermicompost.
Adjust the ratios, less compost and more leaf mould for a big bed kept for longer duration including top dressing.
Let the mix steep for a month.

  7. Thanks mate. Got a question what would you suggest if we are starting out to mic in to stretch the good stuff?

  8. Hi Mark
Any chance you could do a review video on the electric wheelbarrow. I think quite a few of us would appreciate it.

Thank you for all your hard work. Your videos are wonderful and are responsible for this 70 year old getting back into gardening.

    Love from Caboolture

  9. Thanks Mark great stuff I've been doing a very similar thing but with the premium potting mix I've had to sive to get the plastics out 😢 but Thanks for your help 👍

  10. Hi Mark, I don't live far away from you, on the S.C.🦜🐸 Thank you for sharing this information. I have been doing the same thing with my wood chip pile. I haven't actually used the woodchip compost in my plant pots yet, but I think I have got to the stage that yours is at. It looks like black mountain loam! I love your videos. Maybe you could share the seed varieties to start each month? I know most people living here would appreciate this.😃🐨
