A new show coming to streaming on Earth Day, hosted by comedian Zach Galifianakis, was filmed here in British Columbia.

Netflix’s This is a Gardening Show is a “refreshing and whimsical take” on the hobby, which aims to showcase the joy of connecting with the earth and its people, according to the streamer’s description.

And providing the backdrop for The Hangover star’s journey into the world of horticulture is Vancouver Island and the nearby Gulf Islands.

Local viewers will be able to recognize shots of Mount Washington and Brooklyn Elementary School in Comox in the trailer. Denman Island is likely to feature prominently in the show, as Galifianakis owns a home there.

“I were to offer a remedy to the human condition, it would be a garden — or acid,” the actor jokes in the trailer.

“The way we get food is so perverse, right now, I think it’s worth talking about it,” he continues, on a more serious note. “And what we’re leaving this next generation, they may have to know this stuff.”

The premise of the show is that Galifianakis will, with his signature humour, learn about gardening from local farmers alongside the audience.

“People have the potential in them to find beauty and happiness and all this, because I certainly have,” he says in the trailer. “For human beings and for the world itself, the only future is agrarian.”

This is a Gardening Show premiers on April 22.
