Arborists will fill in large gaps on trees with foam and then torch it in the surface to blend in the color a little. Usually it means they had to take out like a wasp nest or something that was in the trunk and you don’t want to leave a huge hole. This is probably an old one and the foam erodes away.

Bore a hole at the bottom of the hole and put a preach stick so the birdies don’t shit on the entrance.
