The mountain laurel I put here a couple of years ago isn't exactly thriving (my guess is it doesn't like the clay soil but I dunno ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) so I'm in the deciding-if-I-want-to-do-this / brainstorming phase of a little layout for this about 675 sq. ft. area.
The soil is clay-ish and the area gets 4-6 hours of afternoon sun — the AM sun is blocked by the house. The soil towards the top end of the area and near the brick edging is fairly shallow/crowded by tree roots.
Some things I am thinking about, in addition to if I can convince my wife to let me do this, are whether this is layered well, if something is in bloom throughout the year, how best to deal with the fescue grass already there, and if any of you much more experienced folks would suggest any other plants, ideas, or anything I am not thinking about.
Thank you!

Wild ginger is a shade plant that suffers if it gets too much light. I have it under trees. What is under my oak looks great. The ginger under my serviceberry gets more sun and leaf edges get burnt.
Add purple coneflower, and coreopsis, they bloom almost all summer
